'Over the moon' - Champion McKenna honoured at homecoming

World Middleweight Champion Aaron McKenna and his brother Stevie were celebrated at a homecoming event in Monaghan town after securing victories in Dublin the previous Saturday night. The brothers took the stage after 7 p.m., and a large crowd gathered to honor their wins. Aaron McKenna, 27, claimed the International Boxing Federation (IBF) world middleweight title after defeating Italian Etinosa Oliha by unanimous decision in Dublin's 3Arena, marking his first professional fight on Irish soil.

With his record now at 22-0, McKenna expressed overwhelming gratitude for the support he received, stating that seeing the crowd had him "absolutely over the moon." Stevie McKenna, 29, also delivered an emphatic win, knocking out Owen O'Neall in the first round of his bout.

Both brothers emphasized the importance of inspiring the next generation, acknowledging their own past as those children. Aaron added that the past 21 years in the sport have been challenging, but the overwhelming support they have received has made all the effort worthwhile. Stevie echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement for the future and the potential for more thrilling events in Ireland.

The McKenna brothers trained under their father, Fergal, who moved the family to the US when they were teenagers to pursue professional careers. Monaghan County Council's Cathaoirleach, Councillor Aidan Campbell, highlighted the immense pride the county feels for the brothers' achievements, emphasizing their strong roots in Monaghan communities.
