'Over the moon' - Champion McKenna honoured at homecoming

At a homecoming reception in Monaghan town, World Middleweight Champion Aaron McKenna and his brother Stevie were honored for their recent victories in Dublin. The McKenna brothers took to the stage after 7pm, with a large crowd gathering to celebrate their wins. Aaron, 27, had just claimed the International Boxing Federation (IBF) world middleweight title after defeating Italian Etinosa Oliha by unanimous decision in the 3Arena. It marked his first professional fight on Irish soil, with a record of 22-0.

Stevie, 29, also delivered an impressive performance, knocking out Owen O'Neill in the first round. Speaking to RTÉ, Aaron expressed his overwhelming joy at seeing the crowd, stating, "This makes it all worthwhile, seeing everyone turn up here, I'm just so grateful and appreciate all the support that I'm getting." Stevie described the atmosphere as "incredible" and emphasized their intention to inspire the next generation, as they were once those same children.

The pair, hailing from the village of Smithborough, were trained by their father Fergal, who moved to the US when they were teenagers. Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Councillor Aidan Campbell, praised the brothers for bringing immense pride to the county, highlighting their dedication, determination, and achievements on the international stage.

They were particularly proud of the strong community roots in Monaghan, including their mother's Carville connection. The council welcomed the McKenna brothers home and recognized their success with a special civic reception.
