Osun poll: Ex-CJN Ariwoola-led council warns against violence, demands credible election

The Council of the Wise, a group led by former Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has expressed serious concerns over the upcoming Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. The council, which focuses on diplomacy, democracy, and development, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to guarantee a free, fair, transparent, and credible poll.

Ariwoola, speaking at a press conference in Abuja, warned that the council was deeply troubled by the growing unrest and undemocratic actions reported in Osun ahead of the election. In the past, violence has led to deaths and injuries, and several political thugs have been arrested for their roles in these incidents. Despite candidates' reassurances of a peaceful election, violence has persisted in some areas.

The council's chairman, Godknows Igali, called for a thorough investigation into the reported deaths and demanded those responsible be held accountable. The council also emphasized the need for transparency and fair play in the election, warning against further loss of lives and urging voters to cast their ballots peacefully.
