Oaxaca proved to be the perfect choice for a memorable Mexico adventure. After spending time in San Miguel de Allende and traveling to Querétaro and Guanajuato, MND summer intern Jared Tucker arrived in Oaxaca eager to explore this southern Mexican city known for its colonial center, ancient ruins, local cuisine, and landscape. Despite the city's rugged and sometimes dirty reputation, Tucker found it to be an authentic and immersive experience.
Upon landing, Tucker was surprised by Oaxaca's differences from other Mexican cities, with less luxury and more adventure-oriented attractions. While he found the colonial city center to be less impressive than San Miguel de Allende, the colorful streets, ornate architecture, and the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán's Museum of Oaxacan Cultures made up for it.
The real adventure began the following day when Tucker embarked on a 12-hour tour to Hierve el Agua, a natural rock formation, ancient ruins, and cultural sites such as mezcal and textile factories.
Oaxaca's unique blend of Indigenous roots, Zapotec and Mixtec languages, and ancient history truly set it apart from other Mexican destinations. The city is part of one of six cradles of civilization in the world, with some Monte Albán pyramids dating back 2,500 years. Tucker concluded that Oaxaca certainly met and exceeded his expectations, making it the perfect destination for a one big Mexico trip.
