Mumbai: BMC Tree Authority To Decide On Felling 35 Trees For Ghatkopar Ramabai-Kamraj Nagar SRA Project

Mumbai, August 13, 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Tree Authority is set to decide on a proposal to fell 35 trees and transplant 11 to clear space for the Ramabai-Kamraj Nagar SRA redevelopment project in Ghatkopar East. The proposal, submitted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in January 2026, involves a plot at Ghatkopar Village No. 194/B (Part) in Kamraj Nagar.

A survey revealed 90 trees on the site, with 46 potentially affected by construction. The BMC has proposed to retain 44 trees, while the remaining 35 will be removed and 11 transplanted. Proposed removal trees include Peepal, coconut, rain tree, almond, and vilayati chich. Several trees are estimated to be 15-30 years old, with some having trunks up to eight feet in circumference.

In response, MMRDA has committed to planting 955 trees at the site within 15 days, consisting of local species and at least six feet tall. The tree plantation will occupy approximately 2,583 sq m of open space and 1,234 sq m designated for recreation, with a seven-year maintenance commitment from the applicant. The proposal is being reviewed under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975.

Public objections were accepted in February, and the Tree Authority can grant, conditionally grant, or reject the permission under Section 8(3) of the Act, subject to payment of fees, deposits, and compensation.
