Multi-million-rand infrastructure theft: Suspected guardrail kingpin arrested in KZN

A suspected kingpin in a criminal syndicate responsible for stealing millions of rands' worth of road guardrails across KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested, according to the KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma. The arrest occurred in Jacobs following an intelligence-driven operation, identified by alleged runners who were apprehended the previous week as part of the department's #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign.

Duma emphasized that the arrest marks the beginning of efforts to dismantle one of the largest criminal syndicates involved in the theft of road guardrails in the province. The theft of guardrails, which stretches for over 34,000 kilometers, is not merely a financial crime but poses a significant threat to motorists' lives. With more than R500 million invested in the installation and maintenance of guardrails across the province's road network, their removal leaves vehicles exposed to potentially fatal crashes, particularly when vehicles leave the roadway and travel down embankments.

The ongoing investigation aims to establish the full extent of the alleged syndicate, including potential links to companies awarded contracts worth over R500 million to erect and maintain guardrails, as well as connections to the Department of Transport and the tow-truck industry. Investigators will also examine whether scrapyards are involved in the theft and disposal of the stolen guardrails.

The MEC stressed that the investigation is intended to protect the province's road infrastructure and hold those responsible accountable. The investigation remains ongoing.
