Mid-October sitting fuels speculation over early Sarawak election

Mid-October legislative proceedings in Sarawak have sparked speculation about the possibility of an early statewide election, with the State Legislative Assembly set to hold its final sitting in the middle of the month. Despite the DUN secretariat not having released an official notice, the sitting is anticipated to be formally announced in September. The 2027 state budget is also projected to be presented during this session, potentially marking the assembly's last major legislative meeting before being dissolved.

This timeline has reignited expectations of an election, especially considering that the previous year-end sessions in 2024 and 2025 were held in November. No formal announcement has been made regarding the assembly's dissolution, but there is a growing expectation that it could occur shortly after the October sitting, paving the way for an election before the December school holidays.

The State Constitution mandates that a state election must be held within 60 days of the assembly's dissolution. This timing is also drawing attention due to an ongoing redelineation exercise by the Election Commission, which could expand Sarawak's state constituencies from 82 to 99. However, senior state and federal leaders, including Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari and Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, have raised doubts about whether the redelineation process can be finalized in time for the next election.

Should the redelineation be completed before the assembly's dissolution, the election would be contested across the increased 99 constituencies. Conversely, if the exercise is not finished in time, the election will proceed with the existing 82 constituencies. With the October sitting emerging as a potential catalyst, the focus is expected to remain on the assembly's formal notice and any subsequent decision on dissolution.
