Medan Pasar set for climate-resilient revamp under KL ‘sponge city’ push, says Hannah Yeoh

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 13 — The historic Medan Pasar in downtown Kuala Lumpur is set for a climate-resilient revamp, according to Minister Hannah Yeoh. The project, a collaboration between Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Yayasan Creador, aims to enhance rainwater management and public accessibility while preserving the square's heritage identity.

Yeoh emphasized that this initiative is part of Kuala Lumpur's broader effort to become a "Sponge City," better prepared for heavy rain and climate change. The revamp seeks to transform Medan Pasar into a more open, accessible, and welcoming public space that benefits residents and strengthens the community. Originally known as Old Market Square, the site has been a cornerstone of Kuala Lumpur's commercial history and boasts landmarks such as its 1937 clock tower, commemorating King George VI's coronation.

Designated as a key site in Warisan KL, the national urban rejuvenation initiative, the square will benefit from Creador Foundation's expertise in heritage-linked projects. This latest effort aligns with DBKL's broader vision to create a Singapore-like urban environment that effectively absorbs rainwater, reduces flood risks, and combats rising temperatures.
