Matthew McConaughey on his sweet return to the big screen

Los Angeles: After an absence of more than five years, Matthew McConaughey returns to the big screen in the indie film The Rivals of Amziah King. The Oscar-winning actor chose the honey-themed thriller set in the American Southwest for his comeback, citing its joy, soul, humor, music, and mythology as reasons. Directed by Andrew Patterson, the movie follows McConaughey's charismatic local honey producer, Amziah, who balances tending his beehives and playing the banjo in a folk band.

McConaughey was drawn to the film's portrayal of Amziah's ability to provide belonging and the way he and others use music and humor to survive. The Southwestern US tale also explores themes of crime, comedy, musical, and drama, with the protagonist reconnecting with Kateri, a young Native American woman played by Angelina LookingGlass.

For LookingGlass, the role was a perfect fit as it allowed her to play a strong Indigenous woman who uses her intellect and resourcefulness. Patterson was delighted to have such a talented actor like McConaughey back in cinema after six and a half years.
