Initially, Colby was favored for the starting role, but Jones has now moved up the depth chart due to his extensive experience and past performance.

Colby, a seventh-round pick, has started 50 of 54 games in college, while Jones, who has been on four NFL teams, missed most of 2025 with a neck injury. The 49ers' head coach, Kyle Shanahan, acknowledged that the battle is still ongoing and that any player could potentially emerge as the leader.
