Mastodon Unveil New Single “In the Ruins” from Upcoming Album: Stream

Mastodon has unveiled a new single titled "In the Ruins" from their forthcoming album, Marrow Deep. The track was inspired by Hurricane Helene, a storm that ravaged the home of singer-bassist Troy Sanders in 2024, forcing him and his family to live away from home for two years. "In the Ruins" showcases a dynamic rock sound that blends Southern rock with Wishbone Ash-style harmonies, featuring muted vocals from Sanders and atmospheric, hard-rocking moments leading to a powerful chorus.

The accompanying music video, created by animation studio Hey Beautiful Jerk, presents an apocalyptic and psychedelic narrative. Frank, an unnamed disembodied eye, roams through a robot-infested hellscape searching for meaning. The concept for "In the Ruins" came to Hey Beautiful Jerk during a 10-hour ER visit for a severe eye infection, mirroring the pain Sanders endured while surviving Hurricane Helene.

The studio's initial spark for Frank and the song's inspiration stemmed from Sanders and Troy's recent losses, encapsulating the phrase "picking up the pieces." Mastodon's Marrow Deep album is slated for release on August 28th, with the band gearing up for their "Poisoned Weapons" tour, which begins on September 16th and continues until October 24th.
