Legon Hospital suspends OPD, specialist services

The University Hospital of Legon has temporarily halted operations in its General Outpatient Department, Specialist Clinics, and Pharmacy counselling unit due to ongoing industrial action by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA). This suspension commenced on Thursday, August 13, 2026, and is set to continue until further notice.

The hospital explained that the move was necessary to address the disruptions caused by the GAUA strike, which has impacted administrative functions at public universities. The Emergency Department, however, remains operational, continuing to offer care to patients in need of immediate medical attention.

The GAUA strike is centered around disagreements concerning the association's conditions of service and various welfare-related issues concerning university administrators. The association has been advocating for these concerns to be addressed, asserting that numerous problems have persisted despite interactions with pertinent authorities.

To mitigate the strike's impact, several institutions have implemented measures to minimize disruptions to their operations. In an attempt to resolve the dispute, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is scheduled to meet with GAUA representatives this week to discuss the issues leading to the industrial action.
