Former DAP MP Ong Kian Ming stated that DAP delegates at a special congress this weekend should vote to keep the party within the Cabinet to ensure the 2027 Budget Statement in October proceeds smoothly. The ex-Bangi MP added that DAP could help ensure foundational stability amid uncertainty in the US economy due to President Donald Trump's administration, particularly regarding developments in the Middle East.

The third reason, he said, is to prevent Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno from gaining leverage over the Cabinet and government, potentially triggering an early election. Ong argued that the sole reason for delegates voting to oust DAP leaders from Cabinet positions is to pressure Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to implement at least some political reforms before the upcoming election.

He emphasized that DAP members and Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters must understand that Anwar will react and act upon receiving pressure from certain individuals, groups, organizations, or political situations. Ong explained that Loke Siew Fook, DAP's Deputy Chief Secretary, called the special congress to remind Anwar that DAP members have the power to force the party leader to step down from Cabinet positions.

Regardless of Ong's statement, the impact of DAP's delegate speech or demands through social media will fade once the majority of delegates vote to remain in Cabinet positions. However, he expressed hope that delegates choose to vote out of the Cabinet. If they decide to leave, Ong said DAP's leader could still determine the timing for DAP Cabinet members to step down.

He mentioned that they could reach an agreement with Anwar to postpone the resignation until the 2027 Budget Statement is approved in the House of Representatives and Senate by December 2026. Moreover, DAP could negotiate with Anwar to pass some crucial legislation during parliamentary sessions, such as limiting the tenure of the Prime Minister to 10 years and ensuring fair parliamentary constituency allocations for both government and opposition MPs.

While these measures may not suffice to ensure PH and DAP remain in power during the second term following PRU16, at least DAP could claim that the party is willing to leave Cabinet based on principle rather than self-interest, he said. On Sunday, 4,264 DAP delegates will decide whether the party should remain in Cabinet or step out of government for the remainder of the Parliament term.

Meanwhile, DAP Perak voiced support for the decision to keep the party within the Cabinet to allow it to fulfill its election promises.
