'It Doesn't Make Sense' — Uncharted Designer Doesn't Want a Remake of Drake's Fortune

Benson Russell, a designer behind two original Uncharted games and currently working at Naughty Dog, shared his reluctance towards a potential remake of Drake's Fortune. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was released in 2007 for the PlayStation 3 and is renowned as the first game in the original trilogy, greatly influencing studios even after two decades. Rumors of a remake have surfaced over the past two years, but it was in August 2026 that Russell shed light on the subject in an interview with FRVR.

Russell argued that remakes don't make sense when the original games are still part of the cultural zeitgeist. He cited System Shock as an example, stating that a remake of that game now makes sense due to its legacy and outdated controls. However, for Drake's Fortune, there is already a version available on modern consoles, so what's the point of remastering or remaking it?

Russell emphasized that he does not see any point in remaking the game. He suggested that to improve the game, they would need to rewrite the entire story, which would inevitably alter the spirit and scenes from the original. Moreover, key set pieces would have to be kept or altered, making it a challenging task. Russell likened the situation to his thoughts on The Last of Us Part 1, stating that old games have their reasons for existing.

He concluded by comparing a remake of Drake's Fortune to a cash grab rather than a necessary addition, stating, "Just don't recreate the first game. It's just, eh." While there is no confirmation of Naughty Dog's plans for a remake, it seems that the studio's focus is currently on their upcoming title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
