Honda Indy Markham: What you need to know for race weekend

The Honda Indy auto racing event will return to Markham this weekend, bringing a new location and a fresh challenge for drivers and fans alike. The race will take place on a street circuit around the Markham Pan Am Centre and York University Markham campus, marking a change from the team's previous runs in Toronto.

Fans can get an early taste of the action on Free Fan Friday, August 14, with access to the grounds for practice and qualifying sessions. In addition to the racing, there will be entertainment featuring Indycar drivers' autograph sessions and a concert from the Kingston country music group The Glorious Sons on race day.

Qualifying for the big race will be held on Saturday between 2:25-4 p.m., determining the starting order for Sunday's event. The race itself will consist of 90 laps, with driver introductions beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the green flag flying approximately an hour later, at 12:22 p.m.

Organizers are encouraging attendees to use the GO train for travel, with additional trains running from Union Station to Unionville GO Station during race days. Parking will be available in the vicinity, with the largest lots located west of the event space off Enterprise Boulevard.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti of Markham expressed excitement and honor at hosting the Honda Indy, emphasizing the city's commitment to hosting the event for at least the next five years. Scarpitti estimates the race will generate $50 million in economic activity for the region, benefiting not only Markham but also surrounding communities in York Region.

Despite concerns from some Toronto residents about the disruption the event may cause, Scarpitti maintains that the benefits outweigh any temporary inconveniences. Kyffin Simpson, a rising star in Indycar, expressed anticipation and curiosity about the new track, acknowledging its technical nature and potential for exciting racing maneuvers.
