Germany’s envoy in Kyiv: Ukraine’s resilience proves it can survive Russia’s war

German Ambassador to Ukraine Heiko Thoms discussed his experiences during the Russia-Ukraine war in a recent interview with NV. Thoms, who spent a winter in Kyiv, highlighted the resilience of Ukrainians and their ability to adapt to challenging circumstances. He emphasized that the war has been ongoing for 12 years, making the current phase particularly difficult due to harsh winter conditions, such as temperatures below freezing and a lack of electricity and heat in various parts of the city.

Despite the hardships, Thoms expressed optimism about Ukraine's ability to overcome the conflict, attributing his confidence to the Ukrainians' resilience and strength. Thoms also stressed the importance of the German embassy's presence in Kyiv, stating that it remains a beautiful city despite the ongoing war, and that Ukrainians continue to find joy in cultural activities like visiting theaters and museums.

He explained that Ukraine's identity and sovereignty are under threat from Russia, which aims to destroy Ukraine's cultural heritage and identity. Thoms affirmed that Germany will continue to support Ukraine, serving as its largest military partner and donor of energy assistance.
