Families mourn victims of Zimbabwe ferry disaster as death toll rises to 46

In a fishing town near Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, mourners gathered for a memorial service on Thursday to say goodbye to those who died when an overloaded ferry capsized on the lake. The death toll has climbed to 46, according to police, although the official count of passengers and missing individuals is still unknown. Authorities estimate there may have been up to 153 people on board, while the ferry's capacity is 90. Rescue efforts have so far saved 77 people.

A memorial service was held at Kariba’s Nyamhunga Stadium, where coffins were displayed in the middle of the field under tents. The ferry, which was transporting passengers from Kariba town to rural settlements and fishing camps, capsized on Tuesday. The disaster has left many families devastated, with some losing multiple relatives.

Collen Ndandalika, a victim’s family member, was among those who grieved at the service. He lost his wife and three children, with two children having been recovered and his wife still missing. Ndandalika expressed his disbelief at the tragedy that had befallen his family, saying, "My wife and children all drowned... I still can’t believe this is a real world I am living in."

The ferry was en route from Kariba town to rural communities and fishing camps, where people heavily rely on the vessel for transportation due to damaged roads and limited public transport. Collen Ndandalika's wife sold goods to residents in rural areas and fishing communities, entrusting her children with the business during school holidays.
