Democratic senators demand answers about conditions aboard USS Abraham Lincoln

Senate Democrats have called on the Pentagon for clarification regarding the circumstances on the USS Abraham Lincoln, in light of recent reports of food shortages, damaged plumbing, and mental health struggles among the ship's crew. In a letter to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary Hung Cao, Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut flagged the vessel's extended deployment—over 250 days without shore leave in more than 200 days—as a cause for concern.

Blumenthal expressed apprehension over the reported shortages of essential supplies, water contamination, plumbing problems, deteriorating mental health, and safety issues on the deck. A Navy official clarified with CBS News that the Lincoln is operating in a volatile region where usual supply routes in the Middle East were disrupted by combat, leading to a shift in priority with food first, followed by hygiene items and mail.

The current situation aboard the ship reportedly indicates a steady supply of clean water, functional air conditioning, and nutritious meals. During its deployment from San Diego on November 21, 2025, the carrier was rerouted to the Middle East following the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28. Family members have confronted Navy officials over the challenging conditions, including food scarcity, raising questions about when the 5,000 sailors and Marines would return home.

Some families have also cited severe mental health issues and self-harm attempts on board. Following a Military Times report of several sailors attempting to jump overboard or being stopped from doing so, Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona urged the Navy to permit a bipartisan Congressional delegation to inspect the USS Lincoln and conduct an oversight investigation into the reported dire situation.

The Navy responded to CBS News, stating that based on available information, they have not identified a rise in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts on the ship. The Lincoln is said to be providing a comprehensive support network, comprising onboard deployment-resilience counselors, chaplains, family support services, military one-source, and medical professionals.
