Cough and flu remedies flying off the shelves as Sibu’s haze refuses to clear

Sibu's haze remains unrelenting, with the Air Pollutant Index reaching 152 as of 4pm today, just as it was on Wednesday. Pharmacist Juliana Ting from the local community has observed a surge in demand for cough and flu remedies amid the cloudy conditions. However, there has not been a marked increase in demand for eye drops or inhalers.

"Health problems such as cough, sore throat, flu, headaches, and fever are common during unhealthy haze conditions," Ting explained. Particularly vulnerable are children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory diseases. She urged these groups to continue prescribed medication, monitor symptoms, and seek medical help if their condition worsens. For asthma sufferers, she stressed the importance of carrying an inhaler, especially during outdoor activities.

Symptoms warranting immediate medical attention include shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, and wheezing. To mitigate health risks, Ting recommended wearing masks, limiting outdoor activities, and staying hydrated. N95 masks are more effective at filtering fine particles from haze than regular masks, but even these do not provide complete protection. Proper usage is crucial – the mask must cover both the nose and mouth.

Ting cautioned against self-medication, emphasizing the need for professional advice when acquiring medication. She advised asthma and lung disease patients to maintain a sufficient supply of prescribed medication at home but cautioned against purchasing over-the-counter remedies such as cough medicine, antibiotics, steroids, or inhalers without a doctor or pharmacist's consultation.

The unhealthy air quality in Sibu, as indicated by the API reading of 152 at 4pm, underscores the necessity for residents to minimize their exposure to the haze.
