Congo-Kinshasa: Race to Find Ebola Vaccine As DR Congo Outbreak Kills More Than 2,000

The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has claimed over 2,000 lives, with health authorities reporting 2,011 deaths out of 4,381 confirmed cases. This current outbreak is considered the largest in the country's history and could potentially become the largest ever. Concentrated in the eastern and northeastern regions, the outbreak began in northeastern Ituri province and has spread to several other provinces, including North Kivu, where health infrastructure and state presence are largely lacking due to years of conflict and insecurity.

The case fatality rate of the current outbreak is estimated at 45.9 percent by Congolese health authorities. Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba stated that they have not yet reached the peak of the outbreak and expect to control its spread within three months, allowing for a decline in cases. However, insecurity due to armed groups and mistrust of the local population have hampered the response to the outbreak in the affected regions.

According to the World Health Organization's regional director for Africa, Mohamed Yakub Janabi, only 30 percent of infected people are being identified, while 70 percent are dying at home.

Congolese virologist Jean-Jacques Muyembe, who helped discover Ebola in 1976, criticized the response as slow and ineffective, stating that there are internal problems at the national level of coordination. On Friday, WHO vaccine experts recommended a full-scale human trial of the existing approved Ebola vaccine, Ervebo, to test if it offers cross-protection against the strain of Ebola currently spreading in the DRC.

The Gavi global vaccine alliance, which maintains a stockpile of 500,000 Ervebo doses, has made these doses available for the trials.

The United States has allocated over $242 million in additional funding to combat the worsening outbreak, bringing direct US financial assistance to more than $500 million in response to the outbreak.
