Christian Council condemns assault of handcuffed cleric at Police Headquarters

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has strongly condemned the assault of a handcuffed Christian cleric at Police Headquarters in Accra, Ghana. In a statement released on Thursday, August 13, 2026, the Council emphasized that such actions violate human dignity and the rule of law, and warned against allowing the behavior of a few individuals to undermine Ghana's tradition of religious tolerance.

The incident follows the arrests of two other religious leaders, Imam Masud Abdullah and Apostle Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei, over alleged offensive remarks about the Prophet Mohammed. Tensions escalated when a Muslim cleric was filmed slapping the handcuffed Apostle Adjei at the Police Headquarters. The CCG called for an immediate and strict adherence to the law in investigating the matter, urging all parties to refrain from retaliatory actions and allowing state institutions to handle the investigation.

The Council referenced Ghana's Constitution and Criminal Offences Act in its condemnation, urging the Ghana Police Service to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the law applies equally to all, regardless of religion or creed.
