Bunkpurugu Police suspend funeral musketry amid security concerns

The Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District Police Command has temporarily halted the use of muskets and gunfire during funeral ceremonies, celebrations, and other public events in Bunkpurugu Township. This decision, outlined in a letter dated August 11, 2026, and signed by ASP Emmanuel Kofi Sintim, the District Police Commander, will remain in effect until further notice.

The move comes in response to increasing worries about public safety, accidental injuries, fatalities, and the current security climate in the area. While the police acknowledged that musketry holds cultural significance and is traditionally used during festivities, they emphasized the need for residents to exercise caution given the present security concerns.

They explicitly stated that "all funeral musketry has been suspended until further notice" and urged chiefs, elders, families, and residents to adhere to the directive. Non-compliance could result in arrests and legal prosecution. The command appealed to traditional authorities, assembly members, community leaders, and residents to back this measure to safeguard lives, maintain peace, and avert accidents during public gatherings.

The directive was also relayed to Lom FM, with the police urging media and community leaders to aid in educating residents about the temporary suspension. The Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri Police Command reiterated that the suspension will persist "until further notice."
