Bharat Tiwari killing: Two months on, Bihar government offers aid to family, Opposition says not enough

Two months after the incident, Bihar's government has promised financial aid and a government position to the family of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, who was killed in a police encounter in June. The announcement came after a judicial commission released its interim report. Choudhary stated that the assistance would be provided based on the interim report examining all aspects of the encounter, including the family's financial situation.

The decision was seen as a response to political unrest sparked by the encounter, with the BJP praising it as a demonstration of the rule of law. However, the opposition argued that while the aid was a step in the right direction, it should be accompanied by accountability and justice. The opposition emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the encounter, questioning the involvement and accountability of police officers.

Tiwari, a social activist, died after being shot during the encounter, which was initially justified by the police as self-defense. The encounter gained traction after a video allegedly showed Tiwari surrendering before the police, challenging the official narrative. This led to protests and road blockades in Bhojpur district, culminating in the suspension of four senior police officers.

A high-level judicial inquiry was subsequently ordered by the Bihar government to probe the incident.
