Andy Lau receives honorary doctorate for achievements in entertainment and contributions to society

Hong Kong Baptist University honored actor Andy Lau with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree, recognizing his outstanding achievements in entertainment and contributions to society. The 64-year-old Hong Kong superstar, who has been a Heavenly King for decades, received the prestigious honor at a conferment ceremony on Monday, August 10.

In his speech, HKBU president and vice-chancellor Professor Alexander Wai Ping-kong praised Lau for his exceptional talent and humanity. He emphasized that, despite the rise of artificial intelligence, there are certain qualities that cannot be replicated by machines, such as Lau's emotional connections and the impact he has had on the Chinese community through his art.

Beyond his successful entertainment career, Lau is also known for his philanthropic efforts. He has supported numerous causes, including disaster relief, children's education, and people with disabilities. More importantly, Lau remains humble and committed to giving back to society through various charitable initiatives and the Andy Lau Charity Foundation, which has provided encouragement and support to disadvantaged groups, particularly young people.

With over 100 Cantonese and Mandarin albums to his name, Lau has sold more than 48 million copies worldwide and has received nearly 500 music awards, including a Guinness World Record in 2000 for holding the record for the most awards won by a Cantopop male artiste. On screen, he has starred in more than 160 films, earning three Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor and two Golden Horse Awards.

In 1991, Lau founded his own production company, which has played a crucial role in nurturing and supporting new generations of Hong Kong filmmakers and creative talent.
