Afiq pays tribute to former JDT captain after MVP triumph

KUALA LUMPUR - Johor Darul Ta zim midfielder Afiq Fazail has been named the M-League's Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2025-2026 season. This marks a significant moment for the 32-year-old player, as midfielders are often overshadowed by forwards when it comes to recognition. Afiq believes that the award highlights the growing appreciation for midfielders and defensive midfielders, who have not always received the same spotlight as strikers who score goals.

Afiq's success puts him in the company of former Malaysia internationals Baddrol Bakhtiar and Safiq Rahim, who were the last pure midfielders to win the MVP award in 2017 and 2015, respectively. The two players were teammates for three seasons at JDT, and Afiq credits his former captain for the lessons he learned during that time. "I learnt a little from Safiq. I played with him before, for two or three seasons," Afiq said.

However, Afiq was careful not to attribute his award solely to his individual performance. He emphasized that winning the MVP is a result of teamwork at JDT. "I feel this is all teamwork. For me, winning the MVP is all about teamwork," Afiq stated. The competition for playing time is fierce within the JDT squad of over 30 players, with several midfielders vying for positions. Despite receiving the MVP award, Afiq understands that it does not guarantee a starting role in the upcoming season.

Afiq also praised JDT club owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim for his unwavering support and persistent drive to improve the team's standards. "The Regent of Johor always pushes the players to do better and become better," Afiq expressed his gratitude. This recognition came after a remarkable season in which Afiq played a pivotal role in JDT's historic quadruple triumph, securing the Sultan Ahmad Shah Cup, Super League, FA Cup, and Malaysia Cup title. He also contributed six assists throughout the campaign.
