6 dead, 14 injured as water, debris enter tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli

Seven lives were lost and 14 others suffered injuries when water and debris flooded an unfinished tunnel during a landslide in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district on Thursday. The Tehri Hydro Development Corporation's hydroelectric project site in the Pipalkoti area was the site of the incident, with 22 workers trapped inside according to PTI.

The HCC was the construction firm responsible for the tunnel, and the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDC) was overseeing the hydroelectric project. Six individuals were pronounced dead, while the remaining 14 received medical attention at a local hospital. The exact status of the two other workers remains unknown.

Rescue operations were launched promptly, with assistance from the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Central Industrial Security Force, and other agencies. NDRF personnel from Rudraprayag were en route to join efforts, and additional teams were prepared to deploy if necessary. District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar and Chief Minister Dhami closely monitored the situation, and the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department's Secretary, Vinod Kumar Suman, reported that the emergency operation centers were tracking the progress.
