Why is the women's 800m record so tough to break?

The world record for the women's 800-meter race, currently held by Czech athlete Jarmila Kratochvílová, stands at 1:53.28 since 1983. Despite advancements in shoe technology, nutrition, and recovery, no one has managed to break this record in 43 years. Keely Hodgkinson, one of the world's top middle-distance runners, is competing at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham this week, raising questions about whether this record will finally be broken.

The men's record, also held by Kratochvílová from 1985, was challenged by Marita Koch of East Germany, who won the 400m record in the same year despite known doping practices. However, Koch never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. In 2017, European Athletics proposed erasing records set before 2005, but the proposal was never implemented.

Kratochvílová's record was broken by a time of 1:53.80 by Swiss athlete Audrey Werro this June, but she remains more than half a second away from the current mark. British runner Jenny Meadows, Hodgkinson's coach, expressed astonishment at the level of performance, stating that she could not have comprehended a female runner achieving such a time.

However, athletes have never been closer to the record. Hodgkinson recently set the indoor 800m record, previously unbroken since 2002. The Netherlands' Femke Broeders-Bol also ran a time of 1:55.60 in June, showing the increasing competitiveness in the event.

Advancements in sports science, such as improved shoe technology and better understanding of nutrition and supplements like creatine and bicarbonate, have contributed to the closer proximity of athletes to the record. The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham will see the top three 800m runners contest a final, potentially turning into a tactical battle. Hodgkinson expressed excitement about the future of women's 800m racing.
