Who next? Tata Steel MD’s name does the rounds after Chandrasekaran steps down

Mumbai - As Tata Sons navigates the uncertainty following N Chandrasekaran's sudden resignation, speculation mounts over who will assume the mantle of chairman. The chairman role, selected by a five-member committee, currently stands vacant until February 2027. Tata Sons, with ample time to plan the transition, must decide on a suitable candidate for the top position.

Notably, Noel Tata, the current Tata Sons director and Tata Trusts chairman, could potentially step in as interim chairman. However, Tata Sons recently amended its articles, barring the Tata Trusts chairman from also serving as Tata Sons chairman. Ratan Tata last held both positions, stepping in as interim chairman in 2016 after Cyrus Mistry's removal. Noel Tata, though a strong contender, may not be eligible to assume the chairman role.

Among the names in the running is TV Narendran, 61, managing director of Tata Steel. A long-standing Tata Steel veteran since 1988, Narendran has been leading the company since 2013. With his extensive experience, he has emerged as a favored candidate to succeed Chandrasekaran as chairman, bringing the necessary expertise and vision to steer Tata Steel through its ongoing transformation.
