White House overhaul carries $927 million price tag

President Donald Trump's administration is set to embark on a $927 million White House overhaul, a significant expansion of projects across the presidential complex. The projects include the redevelopment of the East Wing, construction of a large state ballroom, security improvements, and a new helipad. So far, more than $100 million in work orders have been issued, with $875 million directed into the White House Repair and Restoration account since Trump's inauguration.

The ballroom, initially estimated at $200 million, has seen its cost rise to around $600 million by March. The administration argues that private donors will cover the ballroom's entertainment space, while taxpayers will fund security structures. However, legal challenges have emerged as a federal appeals court ruled that congressional approval is required for the project's continuation.

The administration maintains that the bulk of the spending supports authorized White House security and infrastructure purposes. The East Wing redevelopment and new helipad are among the most extensive transformations of the White House grounds since the middle of the 20th century.
