UAE warns against fake mobile phone instalment ads on social media

Dubai's Ministry of Interior has cautioned the public against deceptive social media advertisements promoting mobile phone purchases on instalment plans. Scammers may exploit these offers to acquire sensitive banking information and funds from unsuspecting victims. The ministry advises consumers to exercise vigilance when encountering online promotions, ensuring the legitimacy of both advertisements and sellers before proceeding with any transactions.

To stay safe, residents are urged to refrain from clicking on dubious links and never disclose banking details or one-time passwords (OTPs). Purchases should be made exclusively from official and authorized retailers. This warning follows continued UAE authorities' efforts to combat online scams where criminals impersonate reputable businesses or lure victims with enticing offers to extract personal information.

In the past quarter of 2026, Dubai Police dismantled 103 fraudulent social media accounts as part of their ongoing anti-online scam initiatives. Authorities have consistently emphasized that fraudsters employ increasingly sophisticated methods, including deceptive messages, websites, and social media profiles, to acquire personal and banking information from unsuspecting individuals.

The Ministry of Interior previously cautioned residents against divulging verification codes, identification details, or banking information in response to suspicious communications. They have consistently urged the public to remain vigilant, verify offers through trusted sources, and refrain from providing personal details or making payments without proper verification.

Abu Dhabi Police also have raised alarms about online scams, particularly those involving fake apps designed to steal bank data. Additionally, Abu Dhabi Police warned the public about counterfeit consumer protection scam websites and cautioned against the use of fake links in search engines.
