TMC rebel MP, MLA forced to leave Cooch Behar home after midnight protests

Former NCPI MP Jagadish Chandra Basunia and his wife, TMC MLA Sangeeta Roy, returned to their residence in Sitai, Cooch Behar district, at midnight after being absent for nearly three months. The couple, accompanied by police protection, had to leave their home shortly afterwards when a group of demonstrators gathered outside and began shouting slogans.

The MP, who won the Lok Sabha seat on a TMC ticket in 2024, expressed concern over maintaining peace in the area and decided to leave under police escort to avoid any potential political unrest. Sangeeta Roy, the sole TMC MLA from Cooch Behar, has not been seen in her constituency since the May 4 assembly poll results. The incident occurred as the party faced a significant electoral setback, leading to 20 TMC MPs, including Basunia, joining the rebel TMC camp led by Ritabrata Banerjee.
