Tension as gunshots rock Rivers varsity

Gunfire erupted at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers State, Nigeria, Monday, as rival cult groups clashed on campus. The dispute involved two factions known as 'Vikings' and 'Clansmen', who were battling for dominance. The exact trigger for the violence remains unclear, but it occurred during the university's Students' Union Government week.

A video on social media depicted students fleeing in fear as gunfire rang out, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. In response, academic activities were briefly suspended, with students seeking refuge in classrooms and hostels to avoid stray bullets.

A rights activist from Port Harcourt, Charles Jaja, condemned the incident, stating that it indicates a loss of control by the university management over the campus. He urged the authorities to take decisive action against the rampaging cultists, drawing parallels with the successful security measures implemented at the Rivers State University under the late Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barineme Fakae.

Jaja emphasized that a clear strategy involving rule enforcement, intelligence-driven security, and swift sanctions is necessary to mitigate the prevalence of cultism and restore a peaceful atmosphere.

Another rights activist, Prince Wiro, expressed concern over the repeated cult clashes at the university, deeming the latest incident embarrassing for both the institution and the state government. Wiro highlighted that similar clashes have been reported in the area over the past year, suggesting that the current security arrangements might be insufficient. He urged the Rivers State Governor to intervene and engage with the university leadership to address security issues on campus and out-of-campus.

The State Police Command confirmed that the clash was between rival cult groups at the university. Police spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, denied allegations that the gunfire was perpetrated by police officers, stating that her officers responded swiftly to a distress call, quelled the situation, and restored order. No casualties were reported, but members of the groups fled the scene. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
