Tamil Nadu adopts resolutions against NEET, FCRA

On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu assembly passed two resolutions opposing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment (FCRA) Bill. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, called for the abolition of NEET, citing its negative impact on social justice and state rights.

Health Minister KG Arunraj argued that NEET disadvantages students from Tamil medium schools, rural regions, and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. He pointed to the frequent cancellations of NEET exams due to paper leaks, which caused distress to students and loss of lives. The resolution was supported by parties including DMK, AIADMK, PMK, and Left parties.

Meanwhile, the BJP MLA Bhojarajan opposed the NEET resolution and left the House. Subsequently, the assembly passed a resolution against the FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026, urging the Union government to withdraw it in its current form. The TVK government argued that the bill could hinder the autonomy of charitable organizations, particularly minority-run institutions, and could undermine the rights of lawfully operating charities, educational, medical, religious, cultural, and social welfare organizations.
