‘Sushmita Dev called me lungi wala’: CPM’s John Brittas accuses BJP MP of ‘derogatory’ remark

NEW DELHI: On Wednesday, CPM MP John Brittas accused BJP MP Sushmita Dev of making a "derogatory" remark against him, stating that the former TMC and Congress leader called him a "lungi wala." The statement came during a session in the Rajya Sabha, where both leaders are members, leading to a disruption and prompting the chamber to suspend proceedings until 2pm."While I was speaking in the House, she made a derogatory remark, 'lungi wala', against me," Brittas told ANI, adding that he was wearing a dhoti and proud of his Malayali and South Indian heritage.

He further argued that such remarks amounted to "stereotypes" and were made in a "derogatory" manner, which is unacceptable. He called for a privileged notice to be moved against her, emphasizing that he has no personal animosity towards her.BJP members requested an opportunity for Sushmita Dev to present her side. Leader of the House and Union minister JP Nadda responded by stating that Brittas' remarks were now on record, and Dev should also be given an opportunity to speak.

He emphasized that they do not subscribe to such statements. Union minister Kiren Rijiju echoed the demand for maintaining the dignity of the House, stating that every member is equal and the Chairman may call the members to his Chamber to discuss the matter. Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan urged members to maintain decorum and respect regional sensibilities, emphasizing the inclusive nature of Indian society and the need to avoid disrespecting the cultural traditions and regional identities of colleagues.

Radhakrishnan subsequently brought the issue to his chamber to resolve it and ensure the smooth functioning of the House.
