Singapore doctor, acquaintance jailed a year each for consuming Ecstasy

In Singapore, doctor Rayson Lee Rui Sheng, 36, and his acquaintance Tan Li Ming, 29, have been sentenced to one year in prison each for consuming MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy, according to The Straits Times. The incident occurred on August 9, 2023, during a police raid at a villa located at the Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa.

Both men were among 49 men arrested during the raid. Lee had attended a birthday party at the villa before visiting a club in Clarke Quay, where he met Tan. They returned to the villa separately in the early hours of August 9. Police discovered substances suspected to be controlled drugs, including Ecstasy and ketamine, along with drug paraphernalia at the scene.

Tests conducted by the Health Sciences Authority confirmed the presence of MDMA in their urine, while their hair samples revealed consumption of both Ecstasy and ketamine. Despite claiming that their drinks had been spiked, the pair could not provide credible evidence to support their allegations. District Judge A. Sangeetha deemed their accounts unconvincing, noting that their hair samples indicated prior drug use.

Lee and Tan were found guilty of one count each of drug consumption following a trial in June. The court acknowledged that neither man was unfamiliar with drug use. The pair have indicated their intention to appeal against their convictions.
