Spain readies for rare solar eclipse, concern over heat and wildfires grows

As the rare total solar eclipse approaches, Spain is bracing for a surge in visitors eager to catch a glimpse of the celestial event, while authorities warn of potential risks such as wildfires due to high temperatures and dry vegetation. Specialized glasses are in high demand as millions of people across northern and central Spain will have some of the best views of the eclipse, which is expected to last less than 2 1/2 minutes.

The Interior Ministry has established 350 official viewing sites and restricted access to 123 others due to environmental concerns. Over 33,500 law enforcement officers will be deployed to ensure safety. Despite the excitement, there is concern for safety, with officials urging visitors not to light fires, litter, or park in areas with dry vegetation.

In Iceland, temperatures are expected to rise above 35 Celsius (95 Fahrenheit), but cloudy skies may hinder visibility during the eclipse. Hotels in Reykjavík have been booked out, and tourists are advised to use proper eye protection when viewing the eclipse.
