Singapore fugitive flees to Johor, ends up kidnapped for S$80,000 ransom

On August 12, a 32-year-old Singaporean fugitive who had entered Malaysia illegally found himself kidnapped and assaulted in Johor. According to Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar, the victim had initially been met by one of six suspects in Johor Bahru, along with his girlfriend, who had also entered Malaysia illegally. The suspects forcefully took the victim's cash, totaling S$12,000 and RM41,400. They later demanded an S$80,000 ransom from the victim's mother in Singapore.

Upon hearing of the ransom demand, the victim's mother reported the matter to the Singapore Police Force, prompting an investigation by Malaysian counterparts. A task force, including officers from Bukit Aman and the Johor state CID, was assembled to apprehend the suspects. During the ransom exchange at a supermarket in Nusa Bestari, Iskandar Puteri, police arrested a 40-year-old suspect and rescued the two victims.

Following the arrest, police conducted raids in Skudai, leading to the capture of four men and a local woman, all believed to be involved in the kidnapping. The five suspects had prior records of criminal and drug offenses, with four testing positive for methamphetamine abuse. Police recovered Singaporean and Malaysian currencies, as well as personal belongings, from the suspects.

The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961, which deals with kidnapping for ransom, and the suspects have been remanded for 10 days. The two victims were also arrested for illegally entering Malaysia.
