She had set out for Bastar. Then a hit-and-run killed the 24-year-old Mumbai biker

A 24-year-old woman, Riddhi Divyesh Thakkar, from Maharashtra’s Borivali (West) was part of a group of bikers touring Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region when she tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident early Wednesday. The incident occurred around 6 am at Markatola ghat in Balod district, when Thakkar's bike was struck by an unidentified heavy vehicle that fled the scene.

Thakkar's co-bikers immediately called a helpline and rushed her to Charama Community Health Centre in Kanker district for urgent medical attention. Due to her serious leg injuries, she was transferred to a private hospital in Dhamtari district, where she succumbed to her injuries at 8.30 am.

The bikers, who hailed from various parts of Maharashtra and other states, had completed their tour and were returning home to Raipur, according to a person known to Thakkar. The Chhattisgarh High Court has recently labeled the issue of road accidents in the state as "alarming" and urged the government to provide an affidavit outlining their efforts to address the problem and rectify hazardous road conditions.

In 2025, Chhattisgarh reported a grim 15,484 road accidents, resulting in 6,967 fatalities and 13,156 injuries. As of May 31, there were already 6,891 accidents, leading to 3,170 deaths and 5,741 injuries. These startling statistics underscore the urgent need for effective road safety measures throughout the state.
