She had set out for Bastar. Then a hit-and-run killed the 24-year-old Mumbai biker

On Wednesday morning, a 24-year-old woman named Riddhi Divyesh Thakkar was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident while on a biker tour in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region. Riddhi hailed from Maharashtra's Borivali (West) and was a member of a group of around 20 bikers who had embarked on a journey from Raipur to Bastar. The incident occurred around 6 am near Markatola ghat, when Riddhi's bike was struck by an unidentified heavy vehicle. Tragically, the vehicle fled the scene without stopping to offer assistance.

Riddhi sustained severe injuries to her legs. Her fellow bikers quickly called for help, and she was promptly taken to the Charama Community Health Centre in Kanker district for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of her condition, she was later transferred to a private hospital in Dhamtari district, where she succumbed to her injuries at 8:30 am.

The group of bikers, comprising individuals from various parts of Maharashtra and other states, had all returned to Raipur following the incident. They are now on their way home. In response to the alarming number of road accidents in the state, the Chhattisgarh High Court recently warned that the issue is "alarming" and requested an affidavit from the government outlining the steps being taken to address the problem and improve road safety.

According to recent statistics, 21 people die every day in Chhattisgarh due to road accidents. In 2025 alone, 15,484 road accidents were reported, leading to 6,967 fatalities and 13,156 injuries. Up to May 31 of this year, 6,891 accidents had been reported, resulting in 3,170 deaths and 5,741 injuries. These startling figures emphasize the urgent need for effective implementation of road safety measures throughout the state.
