Rent Control sets Nov. 30 deadline for landlords

The Rent Control Department (RCD) has set November 30, 2026, as the deadline for landlords and property owners to regularize their tenancy registrations and property records with the Department. In a statement, Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku said the measures aimed to improve transparency, accountability, and tenant protection in the rental sector.

The Department explained that landlords had to issue rent cards to tenants within seven days of the tenancy's commencement, as required by Section 20(1) of the Rent Act 1963. The Rent Control Law 1986 (PNDCL 138) also mandates landlords to issue rent cards and submit tenant and rent information to the Department. Beginning on August 17, 2026, landlords will need to provide evidence of compliance with the rent-card requirement when seeking the Department's services.

Failure to comply with the rent-card requirement could lead to the rejection or delay of landlord applications for administrative services. The Department also recalled that landlords must register every lease or tenancy agreement within 14 days of entering into the agreement. Beginning with the 2026/2027 academic year, hostel operators will be required to issue rent cards to student tenants and comply with registration requirements.
