Proteas focus on test championship

Cricket South Africa has assembled an experimental white-ball squad to compete against Namibia and Zimbabwe in a T20 International Tri-series, commencing on the 28th of this month at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek. Captain Bjorn Fortuin will lead the 15-player contingent, with the selection process centered around player management and prioritizing the generation of more World Test Championship points, as stated by coach Shukri Conrad.

South Africa proudly holds the title of reigning World Test Champions, having defeated Australia in the 2022 final at Lord’s, London, securing the Test Mace for the first time at senior level. The primary focus for the Proteas during this summer is to defend their Test Championship title. To ensure their first-choice players are fit and fresh for the upcoming tests, some young talents will be granted opportunities in white-ball cricket.

Coach Conrad highlights the importance of considering the entire summer situation, including the numerous matches, while providing exposure to younger players and offering breaks to senior players. South Africa has demonstrated strong form in recent tests, winning three out of the four matches against Pakistan and India, and currently ranks second in the World Test Championship standings, trailing behind Australia.

One of the summer's main objectives is to secure a three-match test series victory against Australia at home, with the first test set to commence on October 9th at Kingsmead, Durban.
