Pakistan interior minister in Iran for talks

Pakistan's interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, is currently in Iran to engage in discussions about regional security and stability, according to the Pakistani foreign office. Naqvi, who has a history of mediation efforts between Iran and the US, is reportedly close to the influential Pakistani army chief, Asim Munir.

According to the Iranian state news agency IRNA, Naqvi met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. The talks encompassed a range of topics including bilateral relations, security, regional stability, and the broader developments in the region.

Naqvi conveyed a message from the Pakistani prime minister and the chief of the army to Pezeshkian, the Iranian government's website reported. However, the exact content of this message was not specified. Tehran maintains a stance on retaining control of the Strait of Hormuz following the war, and has proposed charging fees for passage, repeatedly targeting ships attempting to bypass this route. The US has countered with its own blockade of Iranian ports.

Last week, Iran announced an agreement with neighboring Oman for ships to transit the strait, and was in the process of finalizing arrangements for joint management of the strategic waterway. On Tuesday, the US military announced the firing on a Panama-flagged cargo ship that attempted to circumvent the American blockade of Iran's ports.
