Not being allowed to keep cow at home no ground for divorce: Jharkhand High Court

The Jharkhand High Court recently denied a divorced request from a man, stating that his allegations of cruelty, including claims his wife locked the bathroom, disconnected the water supply, and refused to let him keep a cow in the house, were not sufficient grounds to dissolve their 35-year-old marriage. Justices Sujit Narayan Prasad and Sanjay Prasad explained that what may constitute cruelty in one marriage might not be considered cruel in another, and each case should be examined based on its unique circumstances.

The couple lived together for 31 years, until the woman allegedly kicked her 58-year-old husband out in 2020. Despite the man's affidavit stating that his wife tortured him multiple times through acts like locking the toilet door and disconnecting the bathroom water, the court deemed these specific actions and behaviors insufficient to warrant a divorce.

The man had been married since 1989 and raised three children with his wife in a seemingly harmonious environment before the alleged turn of events in June 2020.
