No Marathi, no app-based cab? Maharashtra brings Ola, Uber drivers under language rule

Maharashtra's government has made it mandatory for app-based cab drivers to have a working knowledge of the Marathi language, according to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. This move applies to drivers operating through cab aggregators like Ola and Uber, and ensures they can effectively communicate with passengers. The amendments to the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, now require drivers to demonstrate practical Marathi proficiency for several authorizations related to commercial passenger transport.

Drivers who fail to meet this requirement may face suspension or cancellation of their licenses. The Transport Department, in collaboration with literary organizations, has launched a 105-day Marathi training programme for drivers across the state, aiming to have all non-Marathi drivers proficient in the language by August 15. Over 1.1 lakh drivers have already completed the four-hour training program and will receive certificates at an event in Thane on August 17.
