Nationwide PWDs tax exemption verification underway

A nationwide verification of tax exemption eligibility for persons with disabilities has commenced, according to the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD). The two-day effort, currently underway at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, aims to offer tax benefits to PWDs in both formal and informal employment, as outlined by the Persons with Disabilities Act.

Dr. Michael Munene, CEO of NCPWD, revealed that the 12-week initiative has already started in Kisii, a key region that serves over seven neighboring counties. Thus far, more than 400 individuals have been assessed. Dr. Munene praised the collaborative efforts of the verification team and encouraged PWDs to apply for tax exemption in the designated 12 counties.

Gabriella Ogom, an officer from Kisii NCPWD, explained that the verification process includes checking registration, proof of income, and tax compliance. She added that PWDs who do not meet the criteria can appeal the decision of the assessment team to protect their rights. The verification has been digitized through the e-Citizen platform; applicants must submit their applications online and then attend a physical assessment.

Shem Onserio, Head of the Assessment Team at KTRH, outlined the assessment requirements, which include a national identity card and a birth certificate. Minors must be accompanied by a next of kin. Onserio urged a high turnout from PWDs, emphasizing its significance for the planning of government programs for persons with disabilities.
