Mumbai AC Local: 238 new trains to be made at 3 railway factories, first by 2027

Seventy-four new AC local trains are set to be manufactured at three railway factories in India, with the first train expected to be ready by next year. The decision comes after delays in the previous procurement plan, which would have extended the timeline to 2030. The new plan, approved under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-III and IIIA, will see the trains built at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, and Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Raebareli.

Each train will have 12 coaches and feature an automatic door-closing system. The total cost of the project is Rs 19,293 crore. Maharashtra's local trains are a vital part of the city's infrastructure, with 3,234 services currently running.
