More than 500 fake websites impersonating MHA, Home Team agencies taken down

More than 500 fake websites posing as the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and seven Home Team agencies have been taken down by authorities in Singapore, according to a statement on August 12. The websites, detected by the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) on August 10, were taken down the following day, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a Facebook post.

The fake websites mimicked the official branding and content of MHA and the affected agencies, potentially deceiving members of the public into thinking they were accessing legitimate government websites. However, investigations so far have found no evidence that the fake sites were used for scams or phishing attempts, nor that MHA or Home Team agencies' systems were compromised, MHA added.

HTX's Home Team Sustainment Centre (HTSC) identified the fake websites during routine monitoring, which involves analyzing potential threats to Home Team digital assets, including websites impersonating Home Team agencies and services. The fake sites did not use official government domain names that end with .gov.sg and there is no evidence suggesting they contained false information.

MHA emphasized that the public should remain vigilant when accessing websites that claim to belong to MHA or Home Team agencies. Official government websites end with .gov.sg, and the public is advised to double-check website addresses for any suspicious elements such as unusual addresses, spelling or grammatical errors, poor-quality images, or broken links.

Anyone encountering suspicious websites purportedly belonging to MHA or Home Team agencies is urged to report them to the police via the ScamShield Helpline or through the i-Witness portal. MHA committed to closely monitoring the situation and working with relevant agencies and partners to take appropriate action against any impersonating websites.
