Minnesota man killed his wife and child before dying by suicide, police say

A Minnesota man brutally murdered his wife and child at their in-home daycare center before taking his own life, according to police. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Minneapolis suburb of Hopkins. Police responded to a report of a stabbing at the residence on the 200 block of Tyler Avenue North around 9 am. Upon arrival, they found two adults and a child dead inside the daycare center.

Authorities believe this was a domestic-related homicide and that the deceased man was the assailant, taking his own life after the murders. Brent Johnson, the Hopkins police chief, stated that the attack occurred while a parent was dropping off another child at the daycare, adding that it is a tragic situation that can happen anywhere.

All six other children present at the time were evacuated and have been reunited with their parents, unharmed. The identities of the victims have not been released, and authorities are still investigating the motive behind the killings. Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis and Mayor Patrick Hanlon of Hopkins expressed their condolences to the community and offered any assistance they could provide.

The daycare, located in a quiet residential area, has been licensed by the state since 2019 and has a capacity for 10 children. Records show it has been in compliance during inspections in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Police and sheriff vehicles lined the street where the daycare is located, and photos on the daycare's Facebook page showed a vibrant, child-friendly environment.
