Meet Liverpool’s 18-year-old defender blocked from competitive football by Brexit rules

Liverpool's 18-year-old defender, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, faces a hurdle in his career as he is barred from playing competitive football due to Brexit rules. The Austria youth international joined Liverpool from Vienna for £2.6m and has shown great promise in pre-season, featuring prominently and impressing new manager Andoni Iraola. However, he cannot participate in competitive matches this year because he did not meet the required points target for a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE), necessary for a UK work permit.

Ndukwe will be able to play in the club's remaining friendly against Como on August 16, but not in competitive fixtures. Liverpool is short of centre-back options, with Joe Gomez injured and Jeremy Jacquet recovering from a knee issue. Ndukwe started in Liverpool's 3-1 defeat by Monaco, showcasing defensive skills and winning duels.

However, his situation highlights the challenges faced by overseas players under the post-Brexit work permit system. Liverpool has one Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) place, already occupied by Senegalese teenager Mor Talla Ndiaye, leaving Ndukwe to seek a loan move to build the points needed for a work permit.
