Malaysia and Australia eye domestic neodymium magnet production in rare earth push

Putrajaya, Aug 12 — Malaysia and Australia are considering enhancing their collaboration in the rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals sectors, with a focus on cultivating domestic neodymium magnet production. The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) revealed that this topic was among the principal issues discussed during a meeting between Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup and the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Danielle Heinecke, at Parliament House yesterday.

The NRES highlighted that Malaysia acknowledges Australia's technical proficiency and leadership in the critical minerals sector and is dedicated to establishing a comprehensive domestic REE value chain, from midstream to downstream, adhering to the National Mineral Policy 3 (NMP3). During the discussions, the parties also delved into the dissemination of best practices for managing rare earth processing residues, particularly neutralisation underflow residue (NUF), and the goal of developing domestic neodymium magnet manufacturing capabilities.

Besides critical minerals, both sides also deliberated on hazardous waste management, marine ecosystem preservation, climate financing, and Malaysia's dedication to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31). The NRES emphasized that the fusion of Australia's technical acumen and Malaysia's dedication to sustainable resource management is anticipated to function as a catalyst for competitive green economic growth while delivering enduring advantages to both nations.

The meeting also aimed to bolster bilateral relations and investigate novel areas of cooperation under the Malaysia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), which was set up in 2021, according to the statement.
